Ear Wax
Ear Wax
Cerumen, or ear wax, serves to lubricate and protect the skin of the ear canal. It is normally self-cleaning and has protective properties. A lack of cerumen leads to dry, itchy ears. Ear wax is generally only produced in the outer third of the funnel shaped ear canal and naturally migrates out of the ear, so when cerumen builds up against the eardrum it is often due to probing or attemps to clean the ear with cotton swabs, bobby pins, or other objects. Most individuals never need their ears cleaned. However, some individuals develop an increased amount of wax or have an abnormal curve of the ear canal which leads to a blockage of the ear canal knows as cerumen impaction.
Symptoms of cerumen impaction include:
-
Ear fullness or ear pain
-
Clogged or pressure feeling in the ear
-
Hearing loss
-
Ringing in the ear
-
Itching or discharge from the ear
Minor cases of cerumen impaction may resolve with use of over the counter ear wax cleaners. Over the counter cleaners should never be used if there is a hole in the ear drum, tube in the ear, or other ear disease without first consulting a trained physician. Ear candles should not be used as serious injury has occurred from this technique. However, when the impaction is more severe a trained physician should remove the cerumen. The physicians at Coastal Ear, Nose and Throat will examine your ear and can use a variety of techniques to remove the cerumen. The ear may be examined with a microscope and special instruments or a vacuum can be used to remove the wax and relieve symptoms. Relief is often immediate and complications such as discomfort or minor bleeding are rare.
