Chronic ear infections or chronic drainage from the ear requires special care. Complications can include hearing loss, dizziness, infection including drainage, and spread of the infection outside of the ear to surrounding bone or even the brain. Depending on the severity and acuity of the disease, a variety of medical or surgical interventions may be necessary. Antibioitcs, oral, topical, or intravenous, may be necessary. If the disease is more severe, further testing with hearing tests or CT scans may be necessary. Surgical treatment may be necessary to eradicate ear disease, ranging from tube placement to more complicated procedures. In severe disease, a tympanomastoidectomy procedure may be necessary. This procedure uses the microscope to remove diseased tissue and repair damage from chronic infection. If you suffer from chronic ear infection, contact Coastal Ear, Nose and Throat for an appointment with one of our Board Certified Physicians.
