Otosclerosis
Otosclerosis is a rare condition characterized by abnormal growth in the bones of the ear leading to an inability of the ossicles (ear bones) to vibrate properly and transmit sound to the hearing nerve. Otosclerosis usually presents between the ages of 15-45 with progressive hearing loss. It is more common in Caucasians, and approximately half of the cases are genetic. It affects men and women, but has been known to rapidly progress in pregnant women.
The physicians at Coastal Ear, Nose and Throat can diagnose otosclerosis by examining your ear and with a hearing test performed by an audiologist. The physician will then review the findings with you and together, form a treatment plan. If the hearing loss is mild, serial observation may be recommended. For more severe cases options include hearing aids or surgical correction. An outpatient surgery, called stapedectomy, can replace the diseased ear bones with a prosthesis and correct hearing loss with a 90% success rate.
